Blights Edge: Above and Below
THE WAR a brief history lesson
300 or so years ago, there was a civil war over the next king of Dalimond, a human kingdom. Each branch of the government was primarily magic-user run and there were whole families integrated into the government, and since each branch supported a different heir, things got messy and tragic.
Countrisides were scorched, but the secret police branch, the ‘Executive Office’, specializing in, essentially, keeping forbidden magics and magic users quiet, used their forbidden magics.
They were one of the losers of this war, and were forced into exile. Torrin Macalir, with his prodigal intellect and charisma, ended up becoming the leader of the group.
Their first order of business was freeing other mages accused and held captive for practicing forbidden magic, and then fleeing north and east into the deserted and dangerous tundra.
They had some friends and (former) servants with them who had woodcraft, and many had combat experience or survival spells, but for the most part, they were isolated rich mages suddenly dumped into a cold unforgiving wildnerness. It was only Macalir’s charisma that held them together.
They eventually were approached by the goddess Niatha Moraven who offered them a chance for revenge… if they became her people with all that would entail. Some accepted… Torrin Macalir and a group of others politely turned her down. Those that accepted were transformed and split off to found Kirasanct and become the Fiends.
Torrin’s group continued EAstward into the Barrier mountains, where they founded the Withered Aegis, named to represent their former role as protectors and the pain and suffering they had endured.
the Dalimond kingdom forgot about them as it healed from the effects of the civil war and the excision of an entire branch of magic.
twenty years later, undead started to appear in the lands to the East. Then, one night at midnight, Many magic users awoke screaming from a nightmare. Some went insane. A shockwave from the Eastern mountains flattened buildings and trees in communities to the East of the main human kingdoms of Dalimond, Tazoon, and Morathavia.
The fiends recieved a mystical offer of alliance, which they turned down.
This event marks the start of the war.
The satyrs, beyond the mountains, fell first and were enslaved with mind magic. The Dryads, realizing that they wouldn’t be able to hold out forever, relocated their tree-city to the plane known as the Rift until later in the war, when their assistance was needed. The Aegis’s army of undead, demons, and necromancers advances westward to enact their long-seated revenge. For about 200 years they trample the landscape.
The gnomish city of Rachival falls, leaving the survivors to found New Rachival, a refugee enclave that gradually becomes more entrenched. The dragons are attacked, the elve’s forest is corrupted and blighted.
In general, despite a few victories here and there, the living races (as the ‘good guys’, the Saris, Sslik, Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, and humans were called,) were being pushed back. Although Lesser Aradoth (the smaller subcontident) was fairly free of undead influence, the larger contident (Aradoth) was down to a few enclaves.
Finally, Tazoon- the self proclaimed center of the alliance- was surrounded by Aegis.
Unknown to many, the leader of the living races, Ryson Stormbringer, was engaged in a clandestine quest and ritual.
The final battle proved it’s sucess as people who died on the battlefield returned afresh to drive back the undead. This was the advent of the gifted.
Ryson, also gifted, went toe-to-toe with Torrin Macalir himself. The duel was fierce, and Torrin attempted to escape… Only to die along with Ryson as Ryson set off a device that created a massive energy explosion. Ryson, though gifted, was unable to recover completely and exists as a bound soul as a guide to those who, through misfortune, discover that they are gifted. (you only know it if you die, because you come back. and then you come back again and again and again. the Gifted just don’t die until old age claims them)
With the death of their leader (Torrin is PROBABLY dead Hahahaha) and the advent of the Gift, the Aegis was driven back to to their East and West strongholds. The war is currently at a stalemate.
The elves have their homeland back, the satyr are free, the dryads are present…. but the balance is tenuous.
Also involved are the mysterious trading folk, the Vielo, and the highly spiritual crow-people, the Nissians, who literally hail from the afterlife.
The Aegis’ ranks, particularly currently, are largely a mystery distorted by superstition and mythology.
